Canopy Walk in Nyungwe National Park

Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda is another activity that is done at the park besides the trekking of chimpanzee and other primates species. The park offers a set of activities including the thrilling Canopy Walk in the Forest. Rwanda is popular for its amazing mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park in the north the country.

Nyungwe Forest Canopy walk is about a two kilometer hike to and back. The actual canopy walk is approximately 170 meters. You have to got to trek into the thick forest to the starting point and then after you walk back. The walk begins with briefing by the guide at the offices of Nyungwe National Park before heading into the forest.

During the canopy trek, there is a lot one may see that include primate and bird species plus numerous tree and plant varieties. One reaching the starting point, you will begin walking on the hanging trails connecting one steep hill to the opposite one. On this canopy walk, you will see several birds and primates even though during the actual hanging hike, your attention is focused accomplishing the walk than looking at other attractions in the forest. Walking on the hard ropes tied onto the aluminium bars from a higher elevation is so challenging and nerve impulsive to most walkers but despite all that, its worth the time. As you walk from a high distance to the ground, its advisable that you do not look down something that may increase your nerve impulses. You only need to concentrate, move forward and stay focused to reach the finishing point. Nyungwe forest canopy walk is so interestingly unique that its closer to gorilla trekking.

Canopy walk should not be the your sole reason for visiting the Nyungwe National Park but instead a set of activities. These include chimpanzee trekking, Colobus Monkey tracking, bird tracking, forest walks, trekking the Grey Cheeked Mangabey and Ruwenzori Colobus Monkey plus many more. The park is accessible by road for about 5 hours from Kigali. One can also also take an inland flight from Kigali  to Kamembe Airport that is roughly a 35 minutes duration.
