Kahungye Gorilla Group is a gorilla family in Rushaga, a sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the south. Combined with Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza and Busingye, they make a total of 5 gorilla families that are available for trekking in Rushaga area.
In 2011 Kahungye gorilla group was opened up for trekking after going through the necessary habituation process. And within a span of 12 months, this group had split facilitate the creation Busingye gorilla family. Also found in Rushaga area, Busingye locally means peace.
Kahungye is a name of a hill that is a habitat to most of gorilla family members. And that is how the group came to be called. The family has around 27 individuals of whom 3 are silverbacks. From October 2011, the group has been available for gorilla tracking safaris. Gwigi, a strong Silverback is the head of the 27 members who are very peaceful as well.
Like with all other gorilla groups, visitors for Kahungye are given one hour to spend with gorillas from the time they spot them in the wild. Encountering gorillas in the wild is one of the most electrifying experiences one should enjoy at least once in a lifetime.
